What is Bongó?

Bongó, Meh, and Ojbara are Icelandic words we use to sum up the weather in one word — the same way locals actually talk about it. The verdict is based on temperature, how it actually feels, wind, rain, visibility, and general conditions.

BONGÓ15° or warmer, light wind, and dry is an automatic Bongó. Otherwise, a bright, calm, mild day can still earn the Bongó stamp on points.

MEHNot exactly picnic weather, not the end of the world either. Clouds, a bit of cold, maybe some drizzle — perfectly livable.

OJBARANo need to overthink it: pouring rain, wind past 15 m/s, wild gusts, or visibility gone — that's an Ojbara.

NIGHTFrom 23:00 to 06:00, the night character takes over. Good weather after hours becomes a Night Bongó.

About Icelandic Weather

This is the real way Icelanders see the weather. Not a data dump — one question: is it good enough to bother going outside? No long-winded forecasts, just Bongó, Meh, or Ojbara.

The idea came from the fact that a normal forecast doesn't tell the whole story. Twelve degrees and no wind can be pure bliss in Iceland, while the same number means nothing anywhere else. Icelanders have a saying for this: there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. Bongó exists for the rest — to judge Icelandic weather the way Icelanders actually do.

The yearly tally judges one moment a day, 14:00, for the selected location. Bongó Town of the Year is whichever place has racked up the most Bongó days.
